Based on a true story, this is a loving depiction of a boy learning to play folk tunes in Appalachia from a fiddle master. Becoming a musician of any type, is a process very much like a master and apprentice, and has always been so. In this particularly American version, a young boy is tutored by an aging retired coal miner in the classic tunes of the region, while helping with the older man's farm chores through the seasons. There is an author's note describing the true background story, a note on the tunes mentioned in the text, and a list of resources including books, a discography, videos and related websites.
