Since I travel for a living, this book lives close to my heart, a picture book inspired by Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Ross MacDonald's illustrations are exuberantly nostalgic, and makes for imagining a continental journey possible for little picture book readers. Therein lies my quibble with it, however. It might be an inspiration lost on the younger set, but I'm never against literary references whatever the age. You can never be too young to be introduced to the myriad world of books and authors. Cross country travel is a wonderful way to discover oneself and the country, and Hit the Road, Jack is an imaginative trip.
